Refectory Table Legs

from £360.00

A pair of handmade solid wood refectory table legs, built for dining tables, desks and bespoke solid wood table tops.

These legs are based on traditional refectory and trestle table construction, with a strong plinth base, turned central supports and a wide top rail to carry the tabletop. The shape gives a table presence and structure without needing standard corner legs, making it ideal for larger dining tables, statement desks and rustic farmhouse-style interiors.

Each set is made by hand in my London workshop. The turned pedestals are housed into the leg structure, with the underside shaped so the joining rail can sit neatly into the base rather than feeling like an afterthought. The edges are chamfered by hand, giving the legs a softer, more finished feel while keeping the weight and character of solid wood.

The design is traditional, but the finish is clean enough for modern rustic, farmhouse, cottage, industrial and contemporary interiors. Each pair is made to order, so the width, height, finish and proportions can be adjusted around your tabletop and room.

  • These legs are designed for table tops that need more character than standard metal legs or simple square timber legs.

The refectory shape gives the table a strong architectural base, while the turned supports add a softer, more traditional detail. The plinth base gives weight and balance, and the open centre keeps the design from feeling too bulky.

They work especially well on larger solid wood dining tables, farmhouse tables, refectory tables, statement desks and long kitchen tables. The design gives the piece a proper handmade feel — more like a built table base than a set of off-the-shelf legs screwed underneath.

Because each set is made to order, the proportions can be adjusted so the legs sit correctly with the size and thickness of your table top.

  • The construction is what separates these from standard table legs.

Each refectory leg is built as a proper framed base, not just a decorative support. The turned pedestals are housed into the block sections of the leg, giving the base a more integrated and traditional structure.

The underside is also shaped to allow the joining rail to sit neatly into the leg base. This keeps the rail better located and gives the whole table base a more considered handmade construction.

Edges are chamfered by hand to soften the shape and make the base feel more finished. The result is a solid wood table leg set with weight, structure and detail, while still keeping a simple refectory-style outline.

    • The best size depends on the tabletop length, width and how much overhang you want at each end.

    • For a dining table, the legs are usually set in from the ends of the top to allow seating around the table while still giving the base enough presence. For a desk or work table, the leg position can be adjusted depending on chair clearance, storage and how the table will be used.

    • As a general guide:

    • Smaller tables / desks — slimmer proportions and a narrower base
Medium dining tables — balanced refectory proportions with enough overhang for end seating
Large dining tables — wider, heavier leg sets with stronger visual weight
Extra-long tables — larger bases or adjusted proportions to suit the span

    • Height can be made to suit standard dining table or desk height. Width and base depth can also be adjusted depending on the tabletop size and the look you want.

    • For dining tables, I recommend choosing the tabletop size first, then sizing the leg set around the seating layout.

  • Each set of refectory table legs is made from solid wood, so every piece has its own grain, knots, colour variation and natural markings.

The legs are finished by hand with hardwax oil, giving the surface a smooth feel while protecting the wood for everyday use. The finish brings out the grain rather than hiding it, so the legs keep the warmth and character of real timber.

Natural knots, darker grain lines, lighter sections and small variations are part of the material. These are not faults — they are what make each handmade set unique.

The legs can also be made in different wood tones to match or contrast with the tabletop.

  • These refectory table legs can also be painted for a more traditional or statement finish.

A painted base works especially well with a natural solid wood top, giving the table a classic farmhouse or cottage-style look while keeping the warmth of the timber above.

Because the legs are made from wood, the painted finish can be applied to the base while leaving the tabletop natural. This makes the design more flexible than metal legs and allows the table to be tailored around the room.

Painted finishes are prepared and applied by hand, with colour options available on request.

  • Each pair of refectory table legs is handmade to order by Theo before being prepared for delivery.

Free UK mainland delivery is included. The legs are sent with care and can be supplied for use with a new Artemis London tabletop or as a separate leg set for your own project.

The surface is finished with hardwax oil and should be looked after like real wood. Wipe with a dry or lightly damp cloth, avoid harsh household cleaners, and do not leave standing water on the surface.

For long-term care, the finish can be refreshed with the recommended care products to keep the wood protected over time.
