This set works because it has weight, balance and proper handmade detail without becoming overly decorative.
The table has a strong refectory-style base, with turned pedestals housed into solid plinth blocks rather than simply fixed on top. This gives the legs a much more integrated, grounded feel. The lower joining rail sits through the base assembly, helping the whole structure feel visually connected rather than made from separate parts.
The matching bench follows the same language, with timber X-frame sections cut using cross-halving joints. Half the thickness is removed from each piece so the timbers physically slot through one another, giving the frame a more traditional and mechanical form of construction.
The edges are deliberately softened. The tops have a round-over to the upper edges, the undersides are hand-sanded, and exposed corners are chamfered back so the set feels more like an old refectory table than a freshly machined modern piece.
It is simple, solid and practical, but with enough joinery and hand-finishing to make it feel genuinely made.

Each table and bench set is made to order, so I can adjust the length, width, height and proportions to suit your space.
The table is built with solid timber tops and traditional-style leg assemblies. The turned pedestals are housed into the plinth blocks, with the underside relieved where needed so the joining rail can sit cleanly through the base.
The bench is made to match, using solid timber and cross-halved frame sections where the X-frame timbers intersect. This gives the bench a more considered structure than a simple screwed-together frame.
Across the set, I use chamfered edges, eased corners and hand-sanded details to soften the feel. The table and bench tops have a rounded top edge, while the undersides are finished by hand so they do not feel sharp or overly machined.
The result is a handmade dining set with a traditional refectory influence, suited to rustic, farmhouse, country house and warm modern interiors.

Every table is unique — knots and grain patterns vary from piece to piece, and that natural character is part of what makes solid wood furniture feel genuinely handmade. Wood can move seasonally, and natural characteristics can include small cracks, splits, waves, gaps or subtle ridges between boards.
I only use sustainable wood from positively regenerating forests — for every tree felled, two are planted. -
